Tour the old 1971 South Pole Station
The 1971 Amundsen-Scott South Pole station was the original IGY station built in 1971. Over the years, the station became buried under more and more snow, resulting in buildings being crushed and heat from the buildings melting the snow above causing leaks in the roofs. To keep the station going until the new Geodesic Dome Station was built, the 1971 crew of CBs and USARPs dug out the station roofs and built a false roof shell over the habitable building of the station.
